The story of our top-of-the-line model

The Gaudi has been our top-of the-line model since the MK I was launched in 1996. The Gaudi was designed with the objective of replicating the feel of a full scale orchestra by being able to reproduce the wide frequency range, high sound levels and wide dynamic range that are common at live performances.

With a low end response down to 15Hz and a maximum output level of 120dB, it was able to do a pretty good job. The Gaudi MK I impressed the reviewers at the top Japanese high-end audio magazine Stereo Sound so much that in 1998 they gave it their prestigious Components of the Year Award.

The next generation 

An improved version of the Gaudi MK II, appropriately named the Gaudi MK III, is currently under development.   Due to delays caused by the Covid epidemic, this is now scheduled to be released in 2024. 

It will feature the same moveable four DDD driver array as the Gaudi MK II and Emperor MK II.  The DDD drivers will cover the range from 180Hz to 24kHz.  As this is almost the full audio range, moving the DDD driver array will essentially be the same as moving the whole loudspeaker.  The listener will be able to adjust the position of each DDD driver array from the listening seat using an infra-red remote control.  This will make the final positioning of the Gaudi MK III very much easier than it would be for a conventional 800kg loudspeaker, where the entire loudspeaker would have to be moved.

The extremely wide frequency range of the DDD driver eliminates the need for the crossover point in the mid-range found in most conventional design loudspeakers and with it any discontinuities or other problems that this may cause. This is important as human hearing is most sensitive in this region.

The Gaudi MK III will only be available as an active loudspeaker.   To facilitate this, it will be supplied with the German Physiks Emperor DSP-X digital crossover, which will provide outputs to drive the loudspeaker’s DDD driver, woofer and sub-woofer sections.  The level of each of these outputs will be variable by ± 6dB to allow a degree of adjustment to suit the listener’s room.

As an active 3-way design, each Gaudi MK III will require 3 power amplifiers. The customer is free to use the power amplifiers of their choice, but we hope that they will consider the German Physiks Emperor range. Experience shows that these are ideally suited to take full advantages of the Gaudi Mk III’s exceptional transparency and dynamic range.
